The survey was carried out among 20 districts diversifying into 47 sites, 248 interviewee of eel collectors, 38 eel suppliers, 87 depot owners and 11 wholesalers (exporter) as stakeholder during Jun 2006 to July 2007. The survey based study explores production and marketing of eel fisher community with view to explore the eel trading and value chain involved. Most marginalized segment of population especially land less people, widow and children are involved in eel collection for their livelihoods earning. The marketing channel consisted of a series of intermediaries involving the collector, depot owner, supplier/agent and exporter. Though internationally eels are traded under several grades, it is absent in Bangladesh. Here, above 100 gm per individual is the generalized grading system. The survey exposed that at the present rate of exploitation eels will be extinct within a few decade, to lift up this trading; conservation measure of eels product should be taken, culture and rearing practice should introduce, intervention and participations of collectors in the market chain should be ensured and finally various institutional and non-institutional barriers e.g. high transportation cost/illegal toll/taxation, price exploitative market players between producers and consumers should be eradicated.
