EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SEEDBED MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS ON SURVIVAL OF VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS (Pages : 27 - 30)

S. SULTANA

Seedbed management with six treatments included 1. Neem Oil Cake, 3t/ha (from Bangladesh Neem Foundation) 2. Neem leaves 200g/m2 (fresh, pounded lightly) 3. Sawdust burning (3-inch sawdust burned on top of the seedbed three days before planting 4. Soil solarization (clear plastic placed directly on top of the seedbed for three days before planting) 5. Banana leaf under 3 inches of soil 6. Control, were investigated for controlling soil borne pathogens. Cauliflower and Tomato seeds were used to conduct the experiment. The differences among the final number of surviving seedlings at four weeks after emergence were highly significant for both the cauliflower trial (p<0.001) and for the tomato trial (p=0.001). The sawdust burning treatment appears to be favorable practice in terms of seedling survival of both tomato and cauliflower seedlings and no incidence of damping-off was observed among the seedlings of the sawdust burning treatment.Download
